Helping UCLA stage nation’s largest volunteer day.

In the fall of 2010, First Student Charter Bus Rentals partnered with the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to provide transportation for what is believed to be the nation’s largest university-organized volunteer day.

For the second time in as many years, a fleet of more than 100 First Student school buses transported more than five thousand UCLA freshmen, along with staff, faculty, alumni and other event organizers to locations across Los Angeles. (Map)

Volunteers helped with restoration projects such as painting, cleaning and landscaping at schools, parks and hospitals. Even UCLA Chancellor Gene Block participated in the day’s events, riding a First Student bus to an elementary school undergoing restoration.

First Student enabled UCLA to mobilize over 6,000 volunteers in this country’s largest new student community outreach event. They were a crucial partner in the university’s efforts to improve the lives of other people and protect the natural environment and we are grateful for their outstanding work.

Precise execution for a worthy cause.

To coordinate the bus transportation for one of the largest volunteering events in U.S. history takes precise planning and execution. The 2010 event included three times as many volunteer projects as the year before – and an even greater number of students and staff. First Student Charter coordinators walked the grounds with UCLA Volunteer Day staff to establish seven pick-up locations. “Our Volunteer Day would not have been possible without First Student.” said David Bloome, UCLA Volunteer Center campaign director. “They are such great partners because they get the importance of the growing volunteerism movement and work with us to make these proof-of-concept events a success.”

During the event, First Student Charter coordinators remained on the scene, supporting the UCLA event planners from their command station and ensuring a seamless transportation experience.

“We love First Student” Bloome added. “In 2009, we were in uncharted territory with this new event. First Student was a crucial part of our success. Their logistics knowledge will help us grow this event well into the future.”
